The Blue Mosque Shot in Tungsten

by Nicole Trilivas

Sultanahmet Camii is hailed the “Blue Mosque” by tourists for the blue tile that encases the domes giving it heavenly airs.

Five times a day, the minarets of Istanbul’s mosques sound an ethereal call to prayer. The Blue Mosque is the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets. Legend has it,  Sultan Ahmet I (who commissioned the mosque at only 19 years old) told the architect to make gold (altin) minarets, but it was misheard as six (alti) minarets.

As the Blue Mosque is a functioning mosque, non-worshiping tourists are not permitted to enter during these times. (Remember to bring a shawl to cover your head.)
